How am I growing in my own awareness of my strengths and weaknesses?

How I Learn

I am more aware that I am able to learn through listening and actually doing what is involved in what I am learning. This plays bad with my weakness of learning visually because then I have to try harder to receive the knowledge that is being shared with the rest of the class.

What challenges have I been through?

Marching Band

I have been through the challenge of participating in marching band and being in full IB. They are both time consuming activities that would cause me to be sleep deprived if I was not on task.

In what ways have I started new challenges?

In what ways have I developed new skills?

Rose Bowl Food Stand

I have developed skills by working the Rose Bowl food stand. I would work register and communicate with people that were happy and angry. I had to learn how to help all the people effectively so that they would leave happy and enjoy their day. Then I also was able to hear directions on what to do, or what people wanted to do so I could fulfill their wishes.

In what ways have I shown perseverance and commitment to my activities?

Marching Band

I have shown commitment in my activities by not quitting even when they got frustrating. When I got yelled at in band I just pushed myself harder so that I could perfect the show which would prevent me from getting yelled at. I have been in the activity for so long that I saw the other band members as family. I did not want to be seen as a quitter in their eyes because I cared what they thought about me, especially the other saxophonists which were the people I spent the most of my time with and just made my last year in the CO Marching Regiment the best one.

In what ways have I worked collaboratively?

Going With The Flow

I learned to go with the flow to get things done, that way everything could be done quickly and effectively. This way all the people I was working with had a great time and we were able to create moments that would last a lifetime. I know how to take charge when it is needed to get something done.

In what ways have I been engaged in issues with global importance?

What are the ethical or moral implications of what I’m doing and learning?

Then I have learned that I am a really honest person while working a snack bar at the Rose Bowl, because one of the custemers at the stand I worked at left his credit card and left, but I called him back so that I could return it to him and save him from all the trouble of getting a new one.

Service 4/29/2013

Through the past few months I would help my mom with her store that she owns and makes things for. She would ask my opinion on what colors look good together, or ask me to try something on, that she just came up with. I was then able to add my input in on what I thought about it (like if it was a winner or needed some work) which would help her sell the product in the end. I was able to help my mom with her ideas while doing everything else in my life that are school related, but this fun because I got to let my creativity come out while being at her service. Through this I learned about how people need help all over and that they are happy to get people to help them (in general).

Action 4/28/2013

This past semester I took part in being in Winter Percussion. This activity was very demanding, and required the participants to be in shape when they were marching. I participated in cymbal line which marched, and everyone in that section had to be physically fit due to the speeds at which we would flip our cymbals (one of our cool tricks). Since this was a new section involved there was not much leadership, we would all help each other out in order to accomplish something amazing. At the shows we would fly across the floor where we would be taking an average of 3 steps per second for 2.5 minutes straight! Then we’d get a small brake before we got to march for 2 more minutes. Once the production was done it was 5 minutes of marching, playing, and doing cool tricks with our cymbals (made out of metal, if you don’t know what crash cymbals are think of the monkey banging to metal disks together. Those metal disks are crash cymbals). At the end of the season I learned how to push through my physical fatigue when I was tired and how to communicate with others effectively in order to help them or get clarification on a part of the show. After all the time and effort I was able to learn from my experiences.

On December 1st I preformed with the band at championships, which took place at Ramona High School. We got there and got ready to preform the show that me and my fellow band members put so much effort into. After we finished our show, we got ready to go to awards, where we got high percussion and got 2nd out of the twelve bands there. From there we went to the Covina Christmas Parade where we got to show off our silver medals.

Service 1/19/2013

On November 24th I volunteered at the UCLA vs Stanford game, with other band members. We were working at a food booth were we had to deal with the public, and we got to have a great time doing so.
